Sargent
Equestrian Center prides itself in providing services worthy of
the beautiful facility we occupy. Our trainers, co-owner Jeanne
Williams and her assistant Vernon Helmuth, specialize in the
training of horses and ponies and their owners to drive, from
the first exposure to harness to driving confidently and safely
for pleasure and, if interested, into competition.
We also
will evaluate your horse to judge his/her appropriateness for
driving, and will help deal with problem horses should that be
the situation.
Jeanne
Williams
One of
the founding partners of Sargent Equestrian Center, Jeanne has
been involved with horses since the age of six. She started
running the barrels, and went on to jumping and eventing. The
fascination and challenge of working with young and problem
horses led her to focus on starting and training horses of all
breeds and for all disciplines for the last 20 years. In the
last 8 or 9 years, through an impulse buy at a local draft horse
auction, Jeanne and her late husband Curt became enthralled with
the Clydesdale Horse and began to drive, at first for pleasure
and then competitively. She is quiet and responsive when
interacting with the horse and the owner, focusing on deepening
the interaction and communication between the client and their
horse. She is aware of the importance of potential problems
between horse and rider and endeavors to create a partnership
between the horse and owner based on respect, in which both feel
safe and secure. Her background as a physical therapist gives
her a deep understanding of the biomechanics of the horse and
gives her a unique perspective on the physical and mental
development of an equine athlete.
With her
eclectic approach to training, and warm and compassionate
nature, Jeanne approaches each training situation individually,
combining her understanding of the horse, its background and
physical abilities with your goals and desires.
Vernon
Helmuth
Vernon
joined Jeanne at Sargent Equestrain Center in the fall of 2008
with an impressive driving resume. Growing up in Iowa as a
member of an Amish family known for horse breeding and training,
Vernon arrived with a great deal of experience in all aspects of
horsemanship. He has trained and driven horses virtually from
the time he could walk. Prior to starting at Sargent he worked
at several large draft hitches across the country including the
H & S Belgian Hitch and Hansen’s Hitch. His skills
complement those of Jeanne. His approach to the horse in
training is calm, quiet and gentle. He takes the time needs to
do the job right. He imparts his perspective, experience and
enthusiasm to the novice drivers he teaches and has become an
integral member of the Sargent Equestrian Team.
Vernon
has taken center stage in the show ring for SEC, showing the
Laurelvale Clydesdales and assisting with our client’s horses.
Although the show season was short this year secondary to the
demands of running a large facility, Vernon has had an amazing
year, with many ribbons in numerous classes, culminating in back
to back first places in the 6-up hitch classes at The Draft
Horse Classic in Grass Valley and the LA International Show in
L.A.
We also
have a great staff of assistants who help us with the care of
the horses, and a marvelous facility to train in. During the
summer and school vacations the Juniors, or rather previous
juniors, that have been trained by Jeanne return to add their
livliness and energy to our program.
We would
love to discuss your goals and design a program that works for
you and your horse. Give us a call and make an appointment.
